Frequently asked questions
How do I connect my home/office with NBN?
- An existing dwelling can be connected to NBN by contacting the preferred internet service provider (ISP) and constructing the lead-in for the connection. If the NBN utility box, also known as the premise connection device (PCD), is already installed, an ISP can also be contacted to install the NBN connection box, also known as the network termination device (NTD).
- A new premise can be connected with NBN by lodging an NBN New Development application and submitting a service plan design. A developer contribution charge payable directly to NBN applies. Once paid and the service plan has been approved, a lead-in will need to be constructed extending from the unit to the property boundary. From here NBN will build the connection to your lead-in, installing the PCD, NTD and activating the service. At this point, your preferred ISP can be contacted for your plan of choice.
Why am I not getting the internet speed I am paying for?
Multiple factors influence internet speed:
- Network Setup: the devices transmitting signal types and its location can impact connection speed. A 2.4 GHz signal covers more range, but with lower speeds, while 5 GHz cover less range, but at higher speeds. Ideally the device should be placed where the connection is used most, in a well ventilated area, away from heat, moisture and where the signal path is not obstructed by metal appliances.
- Cable Integrity: deteriorates over time and exposure to moisture or insects/rodents which may have chewed on the cable will affect its performance resulting in poor signal strength and slow internet speeds.
- Internet Service Plan: slow speeds or dropouts maybe a sign that your internet needs are not supported by your chosen service plan. Plan suitability ranges from emailing and web browsing to video conferencing and operating cloud-based applications. Talk to one of advisors today to discuss how your connection can be improved.
- Business nbn plans powered by a committed information rate traffic class, prioritise the business data on the network, to help reduce disruption. These plans are more suitable for businesses that use video conferencing and cloud-based document applications as it offers a consistent committed connectivity, that is not impacted by the activity of others on the network at that particular time.
Is a home or business NBN service plan right for me?

I am demolishing/renovating my home, do I need to disconnect my NBN connection?
If your NBN assets are in the way of your renovation plans, you will need to arrange for them to be removed by authorised personnel prior to renovating, to avoid costly asset replacement fees, and lengthy reconnection delays. Depending on the extent of your plans, an application may need to be lodged to perform a full disconnection and recovery of the assets before demolition.
I am building a house, how many internet ports do I need? Do I need a home hub?
- The number of home or office connections needed depends on the number and type of devices to be used. Fixed devices such as teleconferencing phones, cloud-based computing, smart televisions, gaming consoles, computers and printers should be directly connected with an ethernet cable for higher speeds, a reliable connection and avoiding dropouts.Additional thought needs to be given to digitally-connected lights, keyless entry locks, speakers, security system etc. where the demand is rapidly increasing for smart developments.
- A home hub can centrally distribute the connection to various areas or devices around the home with one central area for control. It makes changes to the network easier and offers better control and management for a wide range of devices.
