WiFi Improvement Tips

WiFi dead zones or insufficient speeds around your home, consider these improvement tips

WiFi dead zones

If you need to extend the WiFi coverage to reach more areas of your home, a quick fix could be adding in WiFi extenders or WiFi mesh devices to enhance the coverage in other areas of your home. The difference being that extenders work with your modem to rebroadcast the WiFi signal, with its own network to reach more areas with less coverage, while mesh devices replace the WiFi connection from your existing modem and provide a more complete coverage with only one network to connect to. WiFi mesh devices also connect your portable devices automatically to the closest WiFi mesh node to ensure top signal strength.

Metal appliances or panels

Metal appliances or panels such as refrigerators, microwaves, and metal art pieces on the wall can block the WiFi signal from transmitting through. This will cause significant reduction in the signal to the space on the opposite side and can even create a dead zone (area with no signal).

Thicker walls

Thicker walls such as concrete, bricks or complex walls that typically contain water pipes, air conditioning ducts and insulation could impact the quality of the signal. Moving your modem away from these types of walls or closer to where you use it most, could improve your WiFi speed.

Electrical Appliances

Electrical Appliances: Placement of the modem behind large electrical household appliances such as washers and dryers will impact the signal transmitted and may result in dropouts.

Other Household items

Other Household items: televisions, cupboard doors, mirrors, shelves, can also block the signal. The modem should not be installed behind any of these items.

Ensuring these items do not obstruct the WiFi signals line of travel, will better improve your internet performance. It should also be noted that the closer you are to your modem, the better the WiFi signal. So, if there is a particular area you like to use your WiFi most, consider that location for modem placement.
